Cherry 2.4

This lil project starts off wit a "cherry" 2.4, Chrome bore 1985, 200, 2.4...Tha lil mota iz on a 21' XTB A-bote wit a 1:87 geered CLE, 3" Allison Jackplate, and a 20" midsection...Begining performance numbers were respectable for the lil mota on a 900+ pound hull...Tha mota in it's stock form would spin a 28" chopper to 6300rpm, to about 78mph, but the holeshot and the midrange punch, left sum to be desired...

We Gunna do sum setup changes and bring out sum HP thats been hide'in in tha lil mota...Now, ya'll pay attention to tha pics, because once it's together and on tha river, all U will be able ta see iz roostertail!!!!!!!!

Dis yher iz da block, still virgin, wit all chrome in good shape and intack...... Tha lil 2.4 haz reely good size fingerports...We lightly cut the exhaust chest, and turned down the lower end of the port...For now, the port hieght wuz left untouched...The exhaust chest wuz not hogged out, but left approx. 1/16th" of the center relief to keep az much bottom end az possible...U no dem bass fishermenz got at leest a 1/2 dozen batry'z and 50#'s ov fish'in poles and 2 ov ever color worm dat Pro Bass Shopz ever made...I thank da "Big Worm" thang iz a hang up type thang...

This iz a shot of the modified cooling holes on this mota, the 2.4's have a cooling problem when they start spinning high rpm's...we will drill a extra hole in between the 2 original holes(U have to remove the lil bridge between the 2 holes)......This improves flow around the lower cyl's, and puts more cooling water where it's needed...Open all holes to 5/16"...I used this modification on the "Fab 4", which wuz aquired from Prof. OB, when he wuz posting on the S&F site...I also added the rubber diverters......Located at the top of #3 and #5 cyls(arrows)...also located in same location on # 4 and #6 on tha port side...Location on starboard are @ 11 Oclock, and port @ 1 Oclock...

Crank remained stock wit addition ov all new bearingz......The center bearingz looked like new, so we used them...I omitted the seal ring above the bottom main...cuts down on friction and helps lube the bearing below...

I used the small rods(left)......in the place ov the larger rod...the samller rod will alow a quicker spin up and less rotating weight...

Reed cages were used in 5 pedal modified form...The cages on the left are highly cut and have cracked during High rpm use, so I slightly cut the stockies on right......We will later replace the 5 peddles wit the new 4 pedal rubbercoated ones...

Tha addition of Dual stage reeds and velosity stacks......Other bolt ons are a crossdrilled 5 pedal Mod VP manifold, and a 2.5 long bell tuner......Tha long tuner will help keep sum bottom end and the big bell will help lett'er turn...Tha X-drilled manifold makes tune'in a pain, bit iz a good midrange power maker...We will probablly paint the manifold "Hemi Orange" for sum added rpm...

I used the original heads, 2 piece hemi heads. took off  .075, which put compression about 143#s......

I used tha stock pistons that were tacken out ov the mota......I cut a square port and drilled an extra F/P hole (far right)...I did this to enhanse flow, witout destroying piston integrity...Tha center piston in pic, is from the "Fab 4"..."D" ported, and only enlarged F/P holes...Tha piston on the left, is a stock, non-Finger ported 2.4...OK, this concludes the original Mods made on tha "Cherry 2.4" my lil "HO 2 fo"...

Now for the Boat set up changes...We decided to go wit a 10 Rapid Jack, from my ole bud, Chuck Goodman...Tha CLE wuz sent to Bob's for the addition ov the A-bote nose cone, and skeg mod...We started the nose cone point, 1" below pad(this would be changes later)...Tha midsection wuz drilled az the performance ones(10 holes), to allow good exhaust flow...solid mounts were added also...

Now, several months, and several more mods, we now have sum performance Numbers for the project...Now to give an update, the 5 pedal reeds were replaced with 4 pedal rubbercoated ones, the WH-31 carbs were replaced with WH-20's, 24volt trim...many diffrent head configureationz wuz tried...

I recieved this report from John(after threatning him) on the performance gains/losses of this lil project, so here we iz...Quote (John "Da Ho" Lambou")...

After sum initial cooling problems(wrong poppit valve) were fixed, the HO2FO reely woke up!!!...My ole big eared chopper would not hold up under the new HP of the new found power...The new holeshot wuz much improved over the stock mota...az far az midrange goes, You would not think it wuz the same mota...One passenger at the 2001 Allison Ralley, could not believe it wuz a 2.4 wit a 28" wheel...He said it pulled like hiz 260!!...

Many configerationz were tried on this motor...Some of the BYUBOYZ went to gulfport for a lil 1000' action wit our Mississippi BYU-Brudders...I decided to bring tha big ole A-bote...before we hit the road, Rex and I decided to put sum 28cc heads and 24" yamaha prop, along wit 24v trim, to help tha big bote git up on the pad and thru the 1000'...My first pass burried my 8000rpm tach, about 750' thru...after the third pass, I blew the clam shells off and stuck a piston...

Performance gain wit this combo wuz impressive wit killer hole shot, super midrange and turning the 28" prop 6800rpm...

After picking up sum trash in bottom carb, and smoking #5 & 6, the mota wuz down for repairs..replaceing pistons and sleeving the 2 bottom holes...We decided to experiment sum and decided to deck block .050 and also the pistons...this will raise the ports without chance of the remaining chrome peeling...it will also change the intake duration...wh-20 carbs were installed and 3/8 fuellines added... I could instantly feel the diffrence in the hole shot and midrange wit 145#s comp and pump gas,wit a river load, it will turn the 24" yamaha 8000rpm wit 1:87 geers...It turned a 28" ET 7200 rpm @ 88.8mph...Wit sum squeeze and a shot of 110 octain, numberswell over 90 can be expected...

Final statement from da Ho...Quote "I would definitely say this project wuz a success"........................................
